Awkland's Honey
Awckland’s Sugar Shack & Apiary is a family-run beekeeping business based in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. The family’s beekeeping journey began in 2012 with a single hive in their front yard. Although that first colony did not survive the year, the experience inspired them to continue learning through classes, conferences and guidance from experienced beekeepers.
Over the following decade, the small backyard project grew into a full-time family operation. Mike Awckland made beekeeping his full-time occupation in 2022, with his family helping to extract and bottle honey and attend local events. His daughter, Sarah, joined the apiary full-time in 2023, working alongside her father in the bee yards. By 2025, the business had grown to approximately 250 hives located throughout Bucks, Berks, Lehigh and Montgomery counties.
Awckland’s produces raw, local and unfiltered honey that reflects the flowers and plants available to the bees during each harvest. The apiary also makes smooth spreadable honey—sometimes called creamed or whipped honey—and homemade beeswax candles. In addition to selling honey products, the family provides pollination services and raises nucleus colonies and queen bees for other beekeepers.
What began with one unsuccessful backyard hive has become a thriving Pennsylvania apiary built around family involvement, continued education and careful attention to the health of its bees.
