East Indian Tea is a brisk, malty black tea with the full-bodied character of Assam and the smooth finish of Orange Pekoe-grade leaves. It can be enjoyed plain or softened with milk, honey, or sugar for a traditional cup. Its story reaches back to November 1774, when the ship Britannia arrived in Charles Town carrying seven chests of East Indian tea. Local merchants were persuaded to break open the chests and dump the tea into the Cooper River—an act of protest now remembered as the Charleston Tea Party. Presented in Oliver Pluff & Company’s signature keepsake tin, this loose-leaf tea offers a flavorful connection to America’s revolutionary past.

Why We Chose It

There’s a Reason It’s Here.

We chose East Indian Tea because it tells a lesser-known story of American resistance. While Boston’s protest is the most famous, Charleston also rejected British-controlled tea in the years leading to the Revolution. Its rich, malty flavor makes it a satisfying everyday black tea, while the keepsake tin gives customers a tangible way to discover and share that history.

The Tea Cast into Charleston Harbor

Oliver Pluff & Company brings the beverages of early America back to the table through historically inspired teas, coffees, cacao, and traditional drink blends. Hand-packaged in Charleston, South Carolina, its products connect familiar flavors with the trade, customs, and acts of protest that helped shape the nation.

East Indian Tea has an especially meaningful connection to the company’s Charleston home. Inspired by the seven chests of tea thrown into the Cooper River in 1774, this brisk Assam black tea preserves the story of a colonial protest that is often overshadowed by the Boston Tea Party. Each cup invites tea drinkers to experience a flavorful piece of America’s revolutionary history.
