MOUNDS pairs a soft, sweet coconut center with a dark chocolatey coating. First made in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1920, its simple combination has remained an American candy-counter favorite for more than a century.
The bar has a wartime chapter, too: during World War II, it was especially popular with service members. Enjoy it on its own or add it to a collection of candies with stories from the 1920s and beyond. Why We Chose It
There’s a Reason It’s Here.
MOUNDS gives the Candy Counter a distinctive coconut-and-dark-chocolate flavor and a story that stretches from a Connecticut candy maker to World War II. It is a familiar bar that rewards a closer look at its history.
Meet the Maker
A Connecticut Coconut Bar That Traveled with Soldiers
Peter Halajian began selling homemade sweets door to door in 1919. The following year, Peter Paul, Inc. first produced MOUNDS bars in New Haven, Connecticut.
During World War II, shortages of coconut and sugar led the company to focus its production on MOUNDS. The bar was popular with U.S. service members; according to Hershey, the military accounted for about 80% of MOUNDS purchases during the war. Hershey began making the brand in 1988 and identifies Robinson, Illinois, as its production destination following a planned 2024 move.
