Douglas Sweets Shortbread brings a beloved Scottish baking tradition to Vermont. Made in small batches with premium-quality butter, these cookies have a delicate crispness, rich flavor, and tender texture that melts in your mouth. Choose Traditional for the pure, comforting simplicity of classic buttery shortbread, or Salted Caramel for a sweeter twist filled with golden, caramelized toffee pieces and a satisfying little crunch. Both varieties pair beautifully with coffee or tea and make an easy treat to serve, share, or tuck into a thoughtful gift.

Why We Chose It

We chose Douglas Sweets because these cookies offer everything we look for in an American-made treat: a cherished family recipe, a genuine small-business story, thoughtful ingredients, and careful small-batch baking. The Traditional and Salted Caramel varieties provide just enough choice while remaining familiar, giftable, and perfect alongside coffee or tea.

A Family Shortbread Recipe Finds a Home in Vermont

Douglas Sweets began with a family recipe, a homemade Christmas gift, and the need to begin a new chapter. After spending two years backpacking through 45 countries with her four children, founder Debra Townsend returned home to Vermont as the holiday season approached. With gifts needing to be homemade that year, she turned to the shortbread her family had always considered a comforting specialty.

Friends loved the cookies and encouraged Debra to start selling them. What began as a small home bakery supplying local co-ops and independent markets gradually grew into Douglas Sweets. Her daughter Hannah joined the business after university, and together they moved production into a dedicated bakery in Shelburne, Vermont.

Today, the mother-and-daughter team continues to bake shortbread in small batches, preserving the comforting simplicity of the original family recipe while adding playful new flavors. It is a story of family, resilience, and a humble homemade cookie becoming a proudly American small business.
