Why We Chose It

There’s a Reason It’s Here.

We chose Bauman’s Classic Fruit Butters because every jar carries forward a Pennsylvania Dutch food tradition that has endured since 1892. The family uses local Pennsylvania produce whenever possible and relies on the natural body of cooked fruit instead of pectin, thickeners, or preservatives. The result is a versatile pantry staple with a genuine connection to local orchards, family recipes, and regional history.

Meet the Maker

From a Cider Press to a Pennsylvania Pantry Tradition

Bauman’s began in 1892 when John W. Bauman installed a cider press in his carriage-manufacturing shop and started cooking apple butter for neighboring farmers. Known in the Pennsylvania German dialect as lattwaerrick, the family recipe soon became the heart of the business. More than a century later, Bauman’s remains a family operation in the historic village of Sassamansville, Pennsylvania, where fruit butters are still made with an enduring respect for the harvest.

Bauman’s Fruit Butter

From the heart of Pennsylvania’s Upper Perkiomen Valley, Bauman’s Fruit Butters carry forward a legacy that began in 1892, when John W. Bauman first started producing apple butter using a cider press and a family recipe passed down through generations. What began as a small local operation quickly grew as neighbors and farmers came to rely on the rich, slow-cooked flavors that defined Pennsylvania Dutch kitchens.

That tradition reaches even deeper into early American history. The recipe itself traces back to Schwenkfelder settlers who arrived in Pennsylvania in the 1700s, bringing with them the knowledge of preserving fruit through slow cooking — a method that allowed families to store food without refrigeration and sustain themselves through the seasons. Today, Bauman’s continues to use those same old-world techniques, cooking fruit down naturally into smooth, flavorful spreads without artificial additives or shortcuts.

At PartyLike1776Again, Bauman’s Fruit Butters represent more than just a pantry staple — they are a true piece of Americana. Rooted in heritage, crafted with care, and still family-run generations later, each jar connects the past to the present, bringing the authentic taste of Pennsylvania tradition to the American table.

Fruit Butter Uses

Bauman’s Fruit Butters pair perfectly with our pancake and dessert mixes because they bring a depth of flavor that goes beyond ordinary toppings. Slow-cooked to a smooth, velvety consistency, these fruit butters are rich, concentrated, and naturally sweet — the ideal complement to warm pancakes, fresh-baked cakes, muffins, and cobblers. Instead of simply adding sweetness, they enhance each bite with real orchard flavor and a hint of old-world spice.

Even beyond toppings, Bauman’s Fruit Butters can be used in place of fruit in nearly any recipe — or added alongside it — to elevate flavor and texture. Whether swirled into batter, layered into desserts, or used as a filling or glaze, they bring a level of richness and depth that turns everyday recipes into something truly special.

Together, they create a true Americana experience. Our mixes provide the hearty, from-scratch foundation, while Bauman’s Fruit Butters add the finishing touch — a tradition rooted in Pennsylvania Dutch kitchens and passed down through generations. It’s a simple combination, but one that transforms everyday baking into something memorable, comforting, and unmistakably classic.
