Postwar America
& the Open Road.

A changing country. A road to somewhere new. Explore highways, community life, familiar treats and everyday play, with room for both shared memories and the experiences that differed.

America’s Open Road · Choose your journey

Every road has a story.

Follow an iconic route into its history, the states along the way and today’s familiar flavors. Choose a road on the map or use the route boxes below.

Route 66 Lincoln Highway U.S. Route 1 U.S. 40 / National Road corridor The Interstate story Chicago Los Angeles San Francisco New York Fort Kent Key West

Simplified historic corridors on modern state outlines; alignments changed over time. The map covers the contiguous United States. Interstate lines show I-80 and I-95 as examples of the larger network.

1926–1985 · A postwar road-trip icon

Route 66

Chicago → Santa Monica

Designated in 1926, Route 66 connected Chicago with the American Southwest and Southern California. Postwar automobile tourism brought travelers to its communities, motels and roadside businesses. The highway was officially decommissioned in 1985, but its stories and surviving stretches continue.

1913 · An earlier coast-to-coast road

Lincoln Highway

New York City → San Francisco

The Lincoln Highway was dedicated in 1913 as a named coast-to-coast route. Its alignments changed, and the numbered U.S. highway system later divided its course among several highway numbers. Its older roadways and communities remained part of the landscape travelers encountered after World War II.

1926 numbering · Key West extension approved in 1939

U.S. Route 1

Fort Kent, Maine → Key West, Florida

U.S. 1 links communities along the eastern United States. Its designation emerged from the 1920s numbered-highway system; the extension to Key West was approved in 1939. The route offered a long north–south journey through cities, Main Streets and changing roadside landscapes.

National Road construction began in 1811

U.S. 40 / National Road corridor

Historic segment: Cumberland → Vandalia

The federally built National Road began at Cumberland, Maryland, in 1811 and reached Vandalia, Illinois, in the 1830s. Much of its corridor later became part of U.S. 40. This selection shows the historic National Road segment—not the full U.S. 40 highway—connecting an earlier travel story with the postwar road.

1956 · A changing highway network

The Interstate story

Illustrative corridors: I-80 & I-95

The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 supplied the funding framework for a greatly expanded Interstate network. New highways changed journeys and the fortunes of communities along older roads. I-80 and I-95 appear here as illustrative corridors; this is not the full network or a snapshot of which sections were open in 1956.

Beyond the postcard

The open road held many stories.

Routes, stops and local character

Older highways and the growing Interstate network shaped where people traveled, stopped and spent money. Route 66 preserves stories of local businesses and communities along a changing road.

A welcome was not guaranteed

Black travelers faced segregation and danger. The Green Book helped identify places to stay and eat. Its history belongs beside the familiar images of motels, diners and family vacations.

New roads, lasting changes

The highway network connected places and reshaped routes through and around communities. The story includes convenience and opportunity alongside questions about what changed for local streets and businesses.
